A fuel delivery should not depend on delayed information or a last-second manual response. At Hartford's XL Center, John C. Digertt Inc. supported startup of an integrated level gauging, automatic shutoff and leak detection package serving a life-safety generator fuel system.

The system was designed to provide active control during filling and continuous visibility across the critical fluids supporting the generator.

From Alarm-Only to Active Prevention

Traditional systems may rely on a local gauge, a high-level horn or an operator watching the delivery. Those measures can help, but they still leave the final response dependent on human timing.

An active overfill prevention system monitors tank level in real time and commands the fill equipment to stop at the defined limit. The objective is to prevent the release, not simply announce that one may be occurring.

Continuous Cable Leak Detection

Perma-Pipe PermAlert cable leak detection was incorporated to monitor the areas carrying fuel oil, engine oil and coolant.

Unlike isolated point sensors, a continuous cable can cover an extended route and help identify the location of a leak along that path. Early detection reduces the amount of released fluid and improves the speed of response.

Commissioning the Safety Sequence

Safety equipment must be tested as an operating sequence. The level gauge, shutdown setpoint, motorized fill device, leak detection and alarm outputs must all respond correctly and in the correct order.

Startup testing verifies that the system does not merely contain the specified components, but actually performs the intended protective function.
